It has become common practice in the electronics industry to
specify the aluminum alloy 6063 or 6061 for finned heatsinks. At
R-Theta we use 6063-T5 alloy for both the fins and the baseplate
for the following reasons:
Like alloys have the same coefficient of expansion.
6063-T5 has a thermal conductivity that is 20% greater
than 6061-T6.
6063 is easily extruded into complex shapes where 6061 is
typically reserved for flat bars and architectural
shapes.
6063 cold forms well providing the intimate metal to metal
contact inherent to all Fabfin heatsinks.
6063 is easily machined. " 6063 takes a finish very
well providing consistent anodizing and chromating coverage.
6063 is a readily available alloy from a multitude of
international aluminum suppliers.
