Metals
The Fabfin and Dual Baseplate processes are ideally suited to
the swaging of aluminum baseplates to copper fins or visa versa.
Best thermal performance at the lowest cost is typically best
achieved by using aluminum for the baseplate(s) and copper for
the fins. Alternatively, mixed metal fins of aluminum and copper
can be used to optimize thermal performance versus weight
(cost).
A grease is used between all aluminum/copper interfaces to
eliminate the possibility of galvanic corrosion.
Depending on the length of the heatsink, crosscuts will be
required when using copper fins to avoid coefficient of
expansion issues but the cross cuts add the benefit of increased
